2002 Reunion

REUNION 15th JUNE 2002

Held at St Peter & Paul C of E Primary School, Eye

After a 15-year interval the Reunion Committee came together again to organise another great get-together at the old school on Saturday 15th June 2002. A website operated by Ian Terry (Class of 1955) was set up and letters sent to all known addresses of possible attendees. The response to the invitations was very enthusiastic with tickets selling like hot cakes!

Eventually, more than two hundred ex-pupils attended with a number of spouses / partners and a sprinkling of teachers including Mr Richard Parker and Miss Ann Fewkes. The reunion had full access to the primary school and grounds, including the sports field for car parking.

Things got underway in the early afternoon and went on till nearly midnight with hot buffet items served for most of the day by Sean Payne, an excellent restaurateur from Ipswich, in support of a busy licensed bar.

A departure from the 1988 reunion was a dedicated church service in Eye Church next door. This was taken by the Vicar of Eye and was thoroughly enjoyed by the ex-pupils who filled much of the seating.  Ian Terry played the church organ.

During the afternoon the Mayor of Eye, Councillor Alan Cooper, visited the reunion and spoke to many of the ex-pupils and staff.

A large display of memorabilia and photos was laid out for everyone to see - all the items being lent by members. This display was organised by Sally Taylor(Aldrich) and Ruby Love (Lines) who spent many hours contacting members and arranging for the loans of the many items.

During the evening live music was provided by a resurrection of the Strangers, Barry Dye's group from the late 50s and early 60s.  Barry hooked up again with Ian Terry on keyboards, Alan Root on lead guitar, Mike Durrant on rhythm guitar/vocals, assisted by Bridgette Dakin's (Chapman) husband, Chris Dakin.

During the day an inter-house penalty competition was run with Blue/Castle house against White/Abbey house. Late at night Bert Hatcher, after many countbacks announced, the expected tie!

Everybody seems to agree that time went so quickly that before one had a chance to speak to all one's old acquaintances it was all over. Many friendships were rekindled and new ones started. Such was the impact of meeting classmates that Rod Bulmer and Barbara Fraser-Jones (Holmes), both of Class 1954, who had not met since their school days were married within the year!!
